What is an Emotional Support Animal?

Unlike service animals, which are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, an emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort through companionship. ESAs do not require specialized training and can be any domesticated animal. Their primary role is to alleviate symptoms associated with a mental or emotional condition as part of a treatment plan overseen by a licensed mental health professional (LMHP).

Who qualifies for an ESA?

Individuals diagnosed with a qualifying mental or emotional disability by a licensed mental health professional may be eligible. Common qualifying conditions include:

• Anxiety disorders and panic disorder
• Depression and mood disorders
• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
• Phobias and social anxiety

The ESA Letter

An ESA letter is the primary documentation establishing your need for an emotional support animal. It must be issued by a licensed mental health professional (psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, or therapist) and should include:

• The professional's license type, number, and jurisdiction
• Confirmation that the individual has a diagnosed mental or emotional disability
• A statement that an ESA is part of the recommended treatment
• The date of issuance and signature
